INDIA - A Potential Design Pool

Industrial Design which is principally the discipline of design for mass production has truly come of age in India. The country has begun to develop its own design sensibility that is gradually finding acceptance the world over. In recent times, Industrial design in India has gained prominence across various industries and is considered a key differentiator for any brand to succeed in a cut-throat market environment. Nowadays every industry, be it an automotive, Telecom, retail, pharma or healthcare, has started incorporating it into their DNA to bring about a radical information and attain high growth.

INCREASING ROLE OF INDUSTRIAL DESIGN

Today, design is not just a prerogative of big multinationals that have always fostered a strong design culture in their organisation. Even regional brands understand the role of design and how it adds value to their overall brand. This is primarily because India is a diverse country with regional preferences that cannot be commonised. Therefore, Design is the only strategic tool that will help the brands resonate with consumers and stay relevant in a highly competitive market.

In the past few years, India has expressed a perceptible interest in Industrial design. In fact, Innovation that has emerged from the design of a product has not only highlighted the USP(Unique Selling Proposition) of the brand, But also helped companies like Hindustan Unilever, Cavinkare, Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, Emami, Titan and Godrej view Industrial Design as strategic function in the entire product development lifecycle.

The investment in design services has escalated exponentially in the past five years. This has furthur been fuelled by the need to design exclusively for the large botton of the pyramid (BOP) segment and India’s ever increasing global presence. Tata Nano is a classic example of how Indian design has completely revolutionised in the automotive sector, form the design point of view. Nano responds to the crucial Indian design issue of affordability, safety and human dignity. Designing in affordable means of transport for an average Indian family commuting on two-wheelers is no mean challenge. Tata Nano offers an affordable design solution to meet a common man’s transportation need. It also stimulates the Indian design community to think out of the box and look at a car not just as style statement, but as a functional, safe, technologically appropriate and aesthetically pleasing product. ’Titan Edge’ the World’s slimmest watch and the Nokia 1100 phone are also the examples of how design has helped business succeed and enabled them to become market leaders in their respective industries. The introduction of I-mark, a quality tag that recognises and rewards good product designs.

FACTORS PROMOTING INDUSTRIAL DESIGN

There are several factors responsible for the emergence of industrial design in India, which has helped it become a integral part of any new brand development. India’s growing economy and increased consumer purchasing power has put a lot of pressure on brands to outperform each other at competitive costs to keep their margins intact. This has resulted in the proliferation of design services as a strategic tool for business transformation. This has been backed by the emergence of instiutions like National institute of design (NID), Industrial design Centre (IDC), India Institute of technology (IIT) and Obviously PEC University of technology ;) that have generated a large design pool, which is necessary to meet the growing industry requirements. Moreover India’s strength in technology has allowed the optimisation of the product development lifecycle through design, which has enabled companies to meet today’s complex business challenges. This has also led to India emerging as a strong R&D destination providing services ranging from research to design implementation. Quite a few companies has set up a their in house design studios in India and have brought with them best practices and knowledge of creating innovative designs. Therefore the benchmark for good design has gone up by several notches.

FUTURE PROSPECTS

Industrial design in India is surging ahead, In 2009, the Industrial design sector was approximately worth US$40 Million (not including outsourced engineering design services) and is growing at 10 per cent annually according to the CII India Design report book

The government has taken up initiatives to promote design including the creation of the design policy in India as well as establishment of the India Design Council. This will help the industry propagate good design and create awareness of its positive impact, which can help uplift the Indian society. This will in return have a positive cascading impact on design education as more students will be exposed to this discipline. Also many international design firms are setting up shops in India, which will influence in the design industry as a whole. In addition, organisations will continue to invest in industrial design; thereby increasing the valuation of their own brands. Subsequently, India will become one of the preferred destinations for design outsourcing because of its talent and ability to produce good designs optimally.

The role of Indian design firms would continue to change from doing execution work to creating intellectual capital for international as well as local companies. These design firms will help companies drive transformation through design.

Lastly, in the future design firms will also look at royalties and design licencing as a way to compensate for design services. With all these current developments and adaptations, India surely has the potential to become the next design hub soon.

Elements & Principles of Design

DESIGN AND COLOUR

The elements and principles of design are the building blocks used to create a work of art. The elements of design can be thought of as the things that make up a painting, drawing, design etc. Good or bad - all paintings will contain most of if not all, the seven elements of design.

The Principles of design can be thought of as what we do to the elements of design. How we apply the Principles of design determines how successful we are in creating a work of art.

THE ELEMENTS OF DESIGN

LINE
Line can be considered in two ways. The linear marks made with a pen or brush or the edge created when two shapes meet.

SHAPE
A shape is a self contained defined area of geometric or organic form. A positive shape in a painting automatically creates a negative shape.

DIRECTION
All lines have direction - Horizontal, Vertical or Oblique. Horizontal suggests calmness, stability and tranquillity. Vertical gives a feeling of balance, formality and alertness. Oblique suggests movement and action

SIZE
Size is simply the relationship of the area occupied by one shape to that of another.

TEXTURE
Texture is the surface quality of a shape - rough, smooth, soft hard glossy etc. Texture can be physical (tactile) or visual.

COLOUR
Also called Hue

VALUE
Value is the lightness or darkness of a colour. Value is also called Tone

THE PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN

BALANCE
Balance in design is similar to balance in physics

A large shape close to the center can be balanced
by a small shape close to the edge. A large light
toned shape will be balanced by a small dark toned
shape (the darker the shape the heavier it appears to be)

GRADATION
Gradation of size and direction produce linear perspective. Gradation of of colour from warm to cool and tone from dark to light produce aerial perspective. Gradation can add interest and movement to a shape. A gradation from dark to light will cause the eye to move along a shape.

REPETITION
Repetition with variation is interesting, without variation repetition can become monotonous.

The five squares above are all the same. They can be taken in and understood with a single glance.

When variation is introduced, the five squares, although similar, are much more interesting to look at. They can no longer be absorbed properly with a single glance. The individual character of each square needs to be considered.

If you wish to create interest, any repeating element should include a degree of variation.

CONTRAST
Contrast is the juxtaposition of opposing elements eg. opposite colours on the colour wheel - red / green, blue / orange etc. Contrast in tone or value - light / dark. Contrast in direction - horizontal / vertical.
The major contrast in a painting should be located at the center of interest. Too much contrast scattered throughout a painting can destroy unity and make a work difficult to look at. Unless a feeling of chaos and confusion are what you are seeking, it is a good idea to carefully consider where to place your areas of maximum contrast.

HARMONY
Harmony in painting is the visually satisfying effect of combining similar, related elements. eg.adjacent colours on the colour wheel, similar shapes etc.

DOMINANCE
Dominance gives a painting interest, counteracting confusion and monotony. Dominance can be applied to one or more of the elements to give emphasis

UNITY
Relating the design elements to the the idea being expressed in a painting reinforces the principal of unity.eg. a painting with an active aggressive subject would work better with a dominant oblique direction, course, rough texture, angular lines etc. whereas a quiet passive subject would benefit from horizontal lines, soft texture and less tonal contrast.

Unity in a painting also refers to the visual linking of various elements of the work.

PRODUCT DESIGN etc

PRODUCT DESIGN
Product design is concerned with the efficient and effective generation and development of ideas through a process that leads to new products.

Product designers conceptualize and evaluate ideas, making them tangible through products using a systematic approach.

Their role is to combine art, science and technology to create tangible three-dimensional goods.

The role of product designers has been facilitated by digital tools that allow designers to communicate, visualize and analyze ideas in a way that would have not been possible in the past.

Product design is synonymous with industrial design, since industrial design concerns processes that bring artistic form and usability to aid mass production of goods.
·

INDUSTRIAL DESIGN

Industrial design is a combination of applied art and applied science, whereby the aesthetics, ergonomics and usability of products may be improved for marketability and production.

The role of an industrial designer is to create and execute design solutions towards problems of form, usability, physical ergonomics, marketing, brand development and sales.

The term "industrial design" is often attributed to the designer Joseph Claude Sinel in 1919, but the discipline has its origin in the industrialization of consumer products. For instance the Deutscher Werkbund, founded in 1907 and a precursor to the Bauhaus, was a state-sponsored effort to integrate traditional crafts and industrial mass-production techniques in Germany.
·
Industrial Design is the professional service of creating and developing concepts and specifications that optimize the function, value and appearance of products and systems for the mutual benefit of both user and manufacturer.

HISTORY of INDUSTRIAL DESIGN

The art of enhancing the look and value of products, Industrial Design started developing in the 20th century.
During the later half of the nineteenth century, the consumer goods industry grew rapidly which necessitated the creation of designer goods, owing to the competition in the market.
Consumers were ready to spend more on luxury goods and lush interior decorations for homes.
In those times, industrial design wasn't a well - defined professional activity. The craftsmen and artists were engaged in industrial designing activities by industrialists, who promoted the development of prototypes for their products. The bulk of industrial designing during the 1920s was carried out in the field of automobiles, electrical appliances and the new inventions.
The engineers though, invented useful items for the public, but lacked the creativity needed to enhance the look of these products.
Trained artists from different art schools, were hired for the creation of commercial art, in order to facilitate the designing of industrial products. The Great Depression of 1929, proved an opportunity in disguise for industrial designers to display their skills.
Frederick W. Taylor, a mechanical engineer by profession, played an important role in improving industrial efficiency during this period.
The profession of industrial designing was institutionalized owing to the surge in demand for industrial designers.
Institutions, like the American Designers Institute and the Society of Industrial Designers, were established in the years 1938 and 1944 respectively.
The two institutions were merged in 1965 to form the Industrial Designers Society of America.

DESIGN
Design informally refers to a plan for the construction of an object or a system (as in architectural blueprints, engineering drawing, business process, circuit diagrams and sewing patterns).
However, one can also design by directly constructing an object (as in pottery and graphic design).
One of the many accepted definitions of design originates from Carnegie Mellon's School of Design, "Design is the process of taking something from its existing state and moving it to a preferred state."
According to the Chartered Society of Designers, “design is a force that delivers innovation that in turn has exploited creativity”. The definition also extends to products that have been produced using an industrial process.
According to the ICSID (International Council of Societies of Industrial Design), "Design is a creative activity whose aim is to establish the multi-faceted qualities of objects, processes, services and their systems in whole life-cycles.
The person designing is called a designer (such as a fashion designer, concept designer or web designer). A designer’s sequence of activities is called a design process. The scientific study of design is called design science.
Designing often necessitates considering the aesthetic, functional, economic and sociopolitical dimensions of both the design object and design process.
It may involve considerable research, thought, modeling, interactive adjustment, and re-design. Meanwhile, diverse kinds of objects may be designed, including clothing, graphical user interfaces, skyscrapers, corporate identities and business processes.

DESIGN AND ART
Today the term design is widely associated with the Applied arts as initiated by the teachings at the Bauhaus and Ulm School of Design (HfG Ulm) in Germany beginning with the early 20th Century.
The boundaries between art and design are blurred, largely due to a range of applications both for the term 'art' and the term 'design'.
Applied arts has been used as an umbrella term to define fields of industrial design, graphic design, fashion design, etc.
To a degree, some methods for creating work, such as employing intuition, are shared across the disciplines within the Applied arts.
Mark Getlein suggests the principles of design are "almost instinctive", "built-in", "natural", and part of "our sense of 'rightness'."

DESIGN & ENGINEERING
In engineering, design is a component of the engineering process.
Many overlapping methods and processes can be seen when comparing Product design, Industrial design and Engineering.
The American Heritage Dictionary defines design as: "To conceive or fashion in the mind; invent," and "To formulate a plan",
and
defines engineering as: "The application of scientific and mathematical principles to practical ends such as the design, manufacture, and operation of efficient and economical structures, machines, processes, and systems.".
Both are forms of problem-solving with a defined distinction being the application of "scientific and mathematical principles".
The increasingly scientific focus of engineering in practice, however, has raised the importance of new more "human-centered" fields of design.
How much science is applied in a design is a question of what is considered "science". Along with the question of what is considered science, there is social science versus natural science.

DESIGN & PRODUCTION
The relationship between design and production is one of planning and executing.
In theory, the plan should anticipate and compensate for potential problems in the execution process.
Design involves problem-solving and creativity. In contrast, production involves a routine or pre-planned process.
A design may also be a mere plan that does not include a production or engineering process, although a working knowledge of such processes is usually expected of designers.
In some cases, it may be unnecessary and/or impractical to expect a designer with a broad multidisciplinary knowledge required for such designs to also have a detailed specialized knowledge of how to produce the product.
Design and production are intertwined in many creative professional careers, meaning problem-solving is part of execution and the reverse.
It would be wrong to say that production never involves problem-solving or creativity, and that design always involves creativity.
Designs are rarely perfect. The imperfection of a design may require a production professional to utilize creativity or problem-solving skills to compensate for what was overlooked in the design process.
PROCESS DESIGN
"Process design" (in contrast to "design process" mentioned above) refers to the planning of routine steps of a process aside from the expected result.
Processes (in general) are treated as a product of design, not the method of design.
The term originated with the industrial designing of chemical processes.
With the increasing complexities of the information age, consultants and executives have found the term useful to describe the design of business processes as well as manufacturing processes.

AESTHETICS

Aesthetics is a branch of philosophy dealing with the nature of beauty, art, and taste, and with the creation and appreciation of beauty.
It is more scientifically defined as the study of sensori-emotional values, sometimes called judgments of sentiment and taste.
More broadly, scholars in the field define aesthetics as "critical reflection on art, culture and nature."M.E (INDUSTRIAL DESIGN) @ PUNJAB ENGINEERING COLLEGE University of Technology, CHANDIGARH

COLOR SYMBOLISM

COLOR SYMBOLISM

Color symbolism can vary dramatically between cultures.
Research has also shown that most colors have more positive associations with them than negative.
So, although some colors do have negative connotations (such as Black for a funeral or for evil), these negative elements are usually triggered by specific circumstances.
Peoples age also has an effect on how colors are perceived. For example, children tend to like bright, happy colors.

BLACK
Black is the color of the night, and of "evil."

Black can also be a color of elegance or class (such as a black-tie only event, and black evening gowns.)

Black can also represent ideas such as power, sexuality, sophistication, formality, wealth, mystery, fear, evil, unhappiness, depth, style, sadness, remorse, anger, and mourning.
Black can also represent a lack of color, the primordial void, emptiness.

It can also mean sorrow or mourning, in the Christian tradition of wearing black to funerals.
Black expresses the depths of the unknown, and encourages the imagination of a different world from that of daylight realities.
Used by itself, black can represent bad luck or misfortune.

BLUE
Blue is the color of the Virgin Mary, and is associated with girls who have similar pure qualities.

In addition, it is the color of water and the sea, with all the symbolic references already discussed for that element - that is, blue usually indicates femininity, life, purity, etc., just as water does.
Blue can also symbolize peace, calm, stability, security, loyalty, sky, water, cold, technology, and depression.

BROWN
Brown represents the ideas of earth, hearth, home, the outdoors, comfort, endurance, simplicity, and comfort.
GOLD
Gold evokes the sensation of looking upon waving fields of ripened rice stalks.

Gold is also associated with royalty. It represents the color of the heavens, and is used to decorate statues of the Buddha and religious temples.

GREEN
Green can represent nature, the environment, good luck, youth, vigor, jealousy, envy, and misfortune.

Green, is regarded as the color of eternal life, as seen in evergreens which never change their color from season to season.

ORANGE
Orange can represent energy, balance, warmth, enthusiasm, flamboyant, and demanding of attention.

PINK
The color pink usually serves two purposes. It can be used to show childish innocence, or a character having child-like personality.

Pink is normally a color associated with girls and femininity.
Pink is considered a color of good health and life - we speak of people being "in the pink" or the "freshness" of a newborn babe.
Pink is also associated with sexuality, and purity. That is, a girl who is a virgin in heart and body. Pink is symbolic of pure love, for example. It is also the color used for sexual advertisements.

PURPLE
Purple can represent royalty, spirituality, nobility, ceremony, mysterious, wisdom, enlightenment, cruelty, arrogance, and mourning.

RED
Red can symbolize many things; from blood, to love, to infatuation.

Basically red symbolizes strong emotions, or things of strong emotions rather than intellectual ideas.

For example, red can symbolize excitement, energy, speed, strength, danger, passion, and aggression.
Red is also looked upon as a sensual color, and can be associated with man's most profound urges and impulses.

SILVER/GREY
Silver/Grey symbolizes security, reliability, intelligence, staid, modesty, maturity, conservative, old age, sadness, and boring.

WHITE
White is a sacred and pure color.

It's the color of angles and gods, as the color reflects that which is sacred and pure.

It is also the color of doctors, nurses, and others in the health profession, as well as cleanliness. In fact, the Japanese refer to nurses as "Angels in White".
White can also represent reverence, purity, simplicity, peach, humility, youth, winter, snow, good, cold, clinical, and sterile.

YELLOW
Yellow can symbolize joy, happiness, optimism, idealism, gold, dishonesty, cowardice, deceit, illness, and hazard.

PART – 2
The meaning of color
Color is all around us. We see it all the time. Most of us have no idea the impact color has on our lives. This impact of the many colors in our environment is usually not conscious. Sometimes we get an uneasy feeling in certain rooms or very relaxed in another, but we call this a mood. The "color of mood" can be what is surrounding us.
Color is a vibration of light. In dim light, the color we see will seem different than in bright sun light. Everyone doesn't see the color frequency in exactly the same way. For example, I see a color I call blue-green, which to me is blue with a touch of green. Someone else may call the color green-blue, because he sees more green than I do. Even color-blind people are affected by color.
The spectrum & color psychology
Sir Isaac Newton used a prism in 1666 and saw the rainbow of colors that we know as the electromagnetic spectrum. Showing that sunlight is not one color, the spectrum is red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet the 7 basic colors.
The primary colors of light are red, green, and blue. In the 1940's Max Luscher developed a color psychology. He used 8 colors in his color therapy, red, yellow, green, blue, violet, brown, gray and black. He claimed that he could tell a person's stress level and psychological make-up by the order the color was chosen or paired with another color. Later a simpler test used only green, yellow, red and blue.
Today we take color very much for granted. I know I can have my shoes dyed to match my pink scarf. I'm tired of the color in my bathroom, so, I'll go buy a gallon of paint. It wasn't so long ago that the only dyes available were from natural sources. Plants, minerals and a few animal or insect life were the only means with which to make dyes. Rembrandt didn't go to the local art shop and buy tubes of paint. He had to grind and mix his paints from things such as lapis lazuli to make blue. Lapis Lazuli was very expensive and hard to get. Check out Rembrandt's paintings, you won't see lots of vivid blue. Purple has been reserved for the royal folk for centuries. The royal folk were the only ones who could afford it anyway. The importing of the indigo plant to Europe changed the fortunes of many people and allowed color to be more used. The indigo plant was highly valued until the discovery of chemical dyes in the 19th century.
Color and how it affects your senses
Today paint companies may hire a paint psychologist to advise what shades of colors will sell best. Color psychologists also work in the decorating field. Orange is used in restaurants, because orange increases the appetite. A good combination for restaurants is pale blue or turquoise and orange. A relaxed atmosphere and a big appetite are the perfect environment for a restaurant.
A few years ago color consultants were very much in demand to help find a color palette that would suit a person the best. I eagerly awaited my appointment with a color consultant to learn my colors were navy blue and most shades of green.
Color Red
Red is the warmest of all colors. Red is the color most chosen by extroverts and one of the top picks of males. On the negative side red can mean temper or anger. In China, red is the color of prosperity and joy. Brides wear red and front doors are often painted red. Red is Tuesday's color. Red roses symbolize passionate love. Ruby rings should be worn on the left hand. Red is the color of Mars. This planet is known as the God of War.
Red Energy
Red is associated with fiery heat and warmth. It can also mean danger (burning).
Red is the color of blood, and as such has strong symbolism as life and vitality. It brings focus to the essence of life and living with emphasis on survival. Red is also the color of passion and lust.
Put some red in your life when you want:
increased enthusiasm and interest
more energy
action and confidence to go after your dreams
protection from fears and anxieties

Color Pink
Pink is the color of universal love. Pink is a quiet color. Lovers of beauty favor pink. A pink carnation means "I will never forget you".
Pink Energy
Pink is a combination of red and white. The quality of energy in pink is determined by how much red is present. White is the potential for fullness, while red helps you to achieve that potential. Pink combines these energies. Shades of deep pink, such as magenta, are effective in neutralizing disorder and violence. Some prisons use limited deep pink tones to diffuse aggressive behaviour.
Pink provides feelings of caring, tenderness, self-worth and love, acceptance.
Put some pink in your life when you want:
calm feelings
to neutralize disorder
relaxation
acceptance, contentment
Color Brown
People who prefer brown are often conventional and orderly. The negative meaning of brown can be a repressed personality or a lazy person. Brown is the color of the earth and is associated with the material side of life.
Brown Energy
Brown can mix into many surroundings. It is a mixture of red, blue and yellow and has many shades and tones - each producing a different effect. Brown can be a stabilizing color. The red in brown gives it practical energy while the yellow and blue add mental focus energies. Too much brown can make a dull effect. Brown gives a feeling of solidity, and allows one to stay in the background, unnoticed.
Some shades of brown create a warm, comfortable feeling of wholesomeness, naturalness and dependability.
Put some brown in your life when you want:
a solid wholesome feeling
to blend with the background
a connection with natural earth and the stability this brings
orderliness and convention
Color Orange
Orange is a power color. It is one of the healing colors. It is said to increase the craving for food. It also stimulates enthusiasm and creativity. Orange means vitality with endurance. People who like orange are usually thoughtful and sincere. Lady luck's color is orange. I have been told that if a change of any kind is need in life, just burn an orange candle for 7 nights.
Orange Energy
While red is associated with fiery heat, orange is associated with the benign warmth of the sun. A dynamic color to be sure, orange offers a more thoughtful control than explosive red. Curiosity is a driving characteristic of orange, and with it comes exploration of new things.
Put some orange in your life when you want:
to spice things up when you feel time is dragging
to become more involved in something
to increase creativity
relief from things becoming too serious
Color Gold
It is no surprise that gold symbolizes wealth used wisely, but it is also the symbol of good health. People who favor the color gold are optimistic.
Gold Energy
The tibetan Buddhist believes in 5 sacred stones: the crystal for light, turquoise for infinity of sea and sky, coral for life and form, gold for the golden ray of the sun, silver for the light of the moon. Gold is intimately linked with Divinity and those gods associated with the Sun. It symbolizes wealth and success.
Put some gold in your life when you want:
increased personal power
relaxation and enjoyment of life
good health
success
Color Yellow
The shade of yellow determines the meaning. Pure, bright and sunny yellow is the easiest color to see. People who are blind to other colors can usually see yellow. Yellow is full of creative and intellectual energy. Always use yellow note pads.
Yellow symbolizes wisdom. Yellow means joy and happiness. People of high intellect favor yellow. Yellow daffodils are a symbol of unrequited love. Sunday's color is yellow-gold.
Yellow Energy
Like the energy of a bright sunny day, yellow brings clarity and awareness. The shade of yellow determines its effect: Yellow-green can mean deceit, and creates a disoriented feeling. Orange-yellow imparts a sense of establishment. Clean light yellow clears the mind, making it active and alert.
Put some yellow in your life when you want:
clarity for decision-making
relief from 'burnout', panic, nervousness, exhaustion
sharper memory and concentration skills
protection from lethargy and depression during dull weather
Color Green
Green is the color of nature, fertility, life. Grass green is the most restful color. Green symbolizes self-respect and well being. Green is the color of balance. It also means learning, growth and harmony. Green is a safe color, if you don't know what color to use anywhere use green.
Green is favored by well balanced people. Green symbolizes the master healer and the life force. It often symbolizes money. It was believed green was healing for the eyes. Egyptians wore green eyeliner. Green eyeshades are still used. You should eat raw green foods for good health. Friday is the day of green. Green jade is a sacred stone of Asia.
Green Energy
Green contains the powerful energies of nature, growth, desire to expand or increase. Balance and a sense of order are found in the color green. Change and transformation is necessary for growth, and so this ability to sustain changes is also a part of the energy of green.
Put some green in your life when you want:
a new state of balance
feel a need for change or growth
freedom to pursue new ideas
protection from fears and anxieties connected with the demands of others
Color Blue
Blue is the coolest color - the color of the sky, ocean, sleep, twilight. The ancient Egyptians used lapis lazuli to represent heaven. Blue symbolizes the Virgin Mary. A pure blue is the color of inspiration, sincerity and spirituality. Blue is often the chosen color by conservative people. Blue is the calming color. That makes it a wonderful color to use in the home, especially for babies. Blue is so soothing that is a good choice for pajamas. Dark blue is the color of truth and moderation. A blue iris means your friendship is very important to me. Wednesday's color is blue. Blue gemstones to wear to feel calm are blue sapphire and blue topaz. Lapis lazuli and azurite are said to heighten psychic power.
Turquoise is the symbol of youth, both the color and the gemstone. This color has a soothing affect. Turquoise is the color of communication. It contains the growth quality of green with the blue quality of communication. Turquoise has long been used in amulets to provide protection, health, confidence and strength.
Aqua is the color of high ideals.
Blue Energy
Blue gives a feeling of distance. Artists use it to to show perspective. This is a good way to understand the energy of the color blue - it allows us to look beyond and increase our perspective outward. It contains a cool vibration that is helpful to communication.
The vibration if blue can be used to open energy flow where it is blocked. Using blue to relax will encourage feelings of communication and peace.
Put some blue in your life when you want:
calm and relaxation to counteract chaos or agitation
to open the flow of communication
to broaden your perspective in learning new information

THE MEANING OF COLOR

THE SPECTRUM
&
COLOR PSYCHOLOGY
Sir Isaac Newton used a prism in 1666 and saw the rainbow of colors that we know as the electromagnetic spectrum, showing that sunlight is not one color, but is composed of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet the 7 basic colors.

COLOR THEORY

COLOR THEORY

With colors you can set a mood, attract attention, or make a statement.
You can use color to energize, or to cool down.
By selecting the right color scheme, you can create an ambiance of elegance, warmth or tranquility, or you can convey an image of playful youthfulness.
Color can be your most powerful design element if you learn to use it effectively.
Colors affect us in numerous ways, both mentally and physically. A strong red color has been shown to raise the blood pressure, while a blue color has a calming effect.
Being able to use colors consciously and harmoniously can help you create spectacular results.

The Color Wheel
The color wheel or color circle is the basic tool for combining colors. The first circular color diagram was designed by Sir Isaac Newton in 1666.
The color wheel is designed so that virtually any colors you pick from it will look good together. Over the years, many variations of the basic design have been made, but the most common version is a wheel of 12 colors based on the RYB color model.
Traditionally, there are a number of color combinations that are considered especially pleasing. These are called color harmonies or color chords and they consist of two or more colors with a fixed relation in the color wheel.
Primary, Secondary and Tertiary Colors
In the RYB color model, the primary colors are red, yellow and blue.
The three secondary colors (green, orange and purple) are created by mixing two primary colors.
Another six tertiary colors are created by mixing primary and secondary colors.

Warm and cool colors
The color circle can be divided into warm and cool colors.
Warm colors are vivid and energetic, and tend to advance in space.
Cool colors give an impression of calm, and create a soothing impression.
White, black and gray are considered to be neutral.

Tints, Shades, and Tones
These terms are often used incorrectly, although they describe fairly simple color concepts.
If a color is made lighter by adding white, the result is called a tint.
If black is added, the darker version is called a shade.
And if gray is added, the result is a different tone.
Tints - adding white to a pure hue:
Shades - adding black to a pure hue:
Tones - adding gray to a pure hue:

Color Harmonies - basic techniques for creating color schemes
Below are shown the basic color chords based on the color wheel.
Complementary color scheme
Colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel are considered to be complementary colors (example: red and green).
The high contrast of complementary colors creates a vibrant look especially when used at full saturation. This color scheme must be managed well so it is not jarring.
Complementary color schemes are tricky to use in large doses, but work well when you want something to stand out.
Complementary colors are really bad for text.

Analogous color scheme
Analogous color schemes use colors that are next to each other on the color wheel. They usually match well and create serene and comfortable designs.
Analogous color schemes are often found in nature and are harmonious and pleasing to the eye.
Make sure you have enough contrast when choosing an analogous color scheme.
Choose one color to dominate, a second to support. The third color is used (along with black, white or gray) as an accent.

Triadic color scheme
A triadic color scheme uses colors that are evenly spaced around the color wheel.
Triadic color schemes tend to be quite vibrant, even if you use pale or unsaturated versions of your hues.
To use a triadic harmony successfully, the colors should be carefully balanced - let one color dominate and use the two others for accent.

Split - Complementary color scheme
The split-complementary color scheme is a variation of the complementary color scheme. In addition to the base color, it uses the two colors adjacent to its complement.
This color scheme has the same strong visual contrast as the complementary color scheme, but has less tension.
The split-complimentary color scheme is often a good choice for beginners, because it is difficult to mess up.
Rectangle (tetradic) color scheme
The rectangle or tetradic color scheme uses four colors arranged into two complementary pairs.
This rich color scheme offers plenty of possibilities for variation.
Tetradic color schemes works best if you let one color be dominant.
You should also pay attention to the balance between warm and cool colors in your design.

Square color scheme
The square color scheme is similar to the rectangle, but with all four colors spaced evenly around the color circle.
Square color schemes works best if you let one color be dominant.
You should also pay attention to the balance between warm and cool colors in your design.
